Summary of activities

A Sociology research centre?

Brief presentation by the Communication and Planning Office.

Peddy Paper and presentation session for the ISCTE-IUL Sociology Student Group (NESISCTE)

Interview and the Focus Group

Researchers: Anne Schippling e Rita Mourão

Interviews are a form of verbal communication in which the interviewee actively reconstructs experiences, events, actions or knowledge. In this activity basic notions of qualitative interview technique will be introduced and different types of interview will be seen. Questions related to the creation of scripts, transcription and qualitative interview analysis will also be a part of the activity. The Focus Group or “focused discussion group” consists in the making of interviews in a group which allow for several people to share different points of view on a certain theme. In this case we promote a discussion between the participants, allowing in this way for the analysis of personal interactions which are established between them. It is a technique with a qualitative character.

Experimental Method

Researchers: Cláudia Santos e Vicente Valentim

The experimental method has as its objective to isolate the effect of a variable, through its manipulation in a controlled context by the researcher. Through splitting up the individuals into groups and exposing the groups to different stimuli, it allows to check if the differences created in  a certain variable are owed to the variable manipulated by the researcher.

Researchers: Ricardo Bento e Rui Telmo Gomes

How to observe the social? What is “participant observation”? How to relate and analyse that which was observed? After the presentation of ethnography as a qualitative methodology for the realization of research in the field, a “field” will be chosen where we will observe quotidian social situations, some more obvious and other more surprising. A discussion on the different forms of observing and relating will close out the day dedicated to ethnography.

Data Analysis

Researchers: Augusta Correia, Carlota Veiga e Mariana Duarte

The analysis of quantitative data has been gaining more and more relevance in the study of social phenomena. The increasing quantity of available data, through the use of the internet (eg. Social networks, governmental institutes, international organizations) allows us to have access to a collection of fundamental information to better understand the reality of social phenomena. So, in this activity, we will have the opportunity to talk about some of the sources for quantitative data information. We will also examine some data analysis techniques highlighting the most common mistakes in their interpretation. The activity will end with some forms of presentation of the results attained during the analysis.

Presentation techniques in an academic context

Researcher: Rita Mourão

Interpersonal/Professional communication techniques tend to be increasingly more relevant for the work of the researcher. This happens as the researcher will have to present work in different Conferences/Congresses, both to specialists and the general public. This session will then have as its objective to bring to light some methods and techniques for the preparation and the performing of oral communications, so that it is possible to understand which the most adequate means to be used are.

Development of a research (team work)

Investigadoras: Britta Baumgarten e Inês Pereira

In the second week of activities, the young people will live the experience of being a researcher. Integrated into a research team, they will have the opportunity to develop a sociological research project, defining the theme and the object of study, choosing the most suitable methodology and research techniques, collecting and analysing data. In the end, the results will be presents in a public session, open to the whole scientific community of CIES-IUL

Public presentation of the research results.
