The Material Precarity of Researchers in the Digital University
Seminar | 15 july 2026

Precarious working conditions in academia have historically been associated with unstable salaries, contractual insecurity and limited access to social support. However, the digital transition has added a new dimension to this challenge: the shift of the workplace from university offices and laboratories to the home environment.

This session analyses the impact of remote and hybrid working arrangements on the lives of higher education researchers in Portugal. Drawing on recent empirical data, it will discuss how technological flexibility intersects with the risk of a growing blurring of boundaries in the workplace.
