CIES-Iscte welcomes Helena Machado, who joins the center as an Integrated Researcher, bringing with her one of the most recognized European research grants.

The researcher is leading the fAIces project - Facial Recognition Technologies: Etho-Assemblages and Alternative Futures, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), through an Advanced Grant, for a total of 2.46 million euros.

The project proposes a social science approach to Artificial Intelligence, investigating the ethical, political and social impacts of facial recognition technologies, contributing to an urgent debate on rights, surveillance and alternative futures in a technologically mediated world. The project team, led by the researcher, will also be made up of two PhD researchers and three PhD students, to develop the project over the next 5 years.
