António Firmino da Costa awarded with the Medal of Scientific Merit
Science meeting 2019

 

 

António Firmino da Costa, CIES-IUL researcher, has been awarded with the Medal of Scientific Merit, during the Science Meeting 2019, which took place in Lisbon.

 

The medal of scientific merit is intended to reward national or foreign individuals who, for their high professional qualities and fulfillment of their duties, have distinguished themselves for their valuable and exceptional contribution to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal.

 

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education distinguished nine researchers and two mayors. The distinctions were presented by the Prime Minister during the Science Meeting 2019.

 

CIES-IUL congratulates the Professor and Researcher for the deserved recognition and award of the Medal of Scientific Merit.

 

 


 

 

António Firmino da Costa has unparalleled contributions in the study of social inequalities, science and society, literacy and education, urban cultures and cultural identities and research methodology in social sciences, and contributes decisively to the understanding of scientific culture in Portugal, including the development and planning of Ciência Viva.

 

António Firmino da Costa, PhD in Sociology and Professor of the Department of Sociology of the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (IUL), also distinguished himself by the promotion of social sciences in Portugal, having trained several generations of sociologists.
