Lígia Amancio graduated in Psychology and Educational Studies at the University of Paris VIII and started teaching at ISCTE in 1978-79 where she concluded her PhD in Sociology in 1989 and presented her "habilitation" in 1999. She is full professor of social psychology since 2002. Following her PhD which marked the beginning of gender studies in Portugal she dedicated her research career to understanding the social construction of gender categories and its impact on discrimination, in particular discrimination of women in public and highly qualified professions such as politics, sciences and medicine. She supervised / co-supervised (2) 9 PhDs at ISCTE and other national institutions and two post doctoral researchers. She was visiting professor and gave seminars in doctoral programmes at the Universities of Brandeis (USA) Helsinky (FN), Geneva (SW), School of Social Sciences in Paris (FR) and Bahia (BR).
