"Being a Social Scientist" | CIES-IUL welcomes young students

From 1 to 12 July 2019, CIES-IUL promoted the internship "Being a Social Scientist" and welcomed students from primary and secondary education who got to know the various stages and activities inherent to research in social sciences.

Since 2003, CIES-IUL has participated in the "Ciência Viva no Laboratório" programme, an initiative of Ciência Viva - National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture wich main objectives are "to bring young people closer to science, creating opportunities to approach them to the reality of scientific research through internships in public and private laboratories, research centres and higher education institutions", as well as "to promote contact between scientific and higher education research institutions and young people in secondary education".

About the internship "Being a Social Scientist".

The internship aims to provide a first contact with the daily life of a research centre in social sciences, its spaces, protagonists, projects and methodologies.

In 2019, CIES-IUL once again opened its doors to young people interested in getting to know and experience the activities inherent to social science research, under the guidance of the Centre's members: Rita Mourão, Mara Clemente, Ana Pinto Martinho, Décio Telo, José Moreno, Daniel Malet, Rita Cachado, Carlota Veiga, Ana Rita Capucha, Inês Santos Tavares, Anne Schippling, Inês Casquilho Martins and Vanessa Figueiredo.

The participants also had the opportunity to get to know the Nucleus of Sociology Students of ISCTE-IUL (NESISCTE).

In addition to the presentation of the Centre and the surrounding university context, we sought to provide a practical and diversified notion of what social sciences research is all about. To this end, the trainees were integrated into research teams with ongoing projects on various themes, experimenting with different data collection and processing techniques, as well as different ways of presenting and disseminating scientific results.

The internship came to an end with a Focus Group session in which students of the same nature of the Centre for International Studies participated, in a synergy of the two R&D units of the School of Sociology and Public Policy of ISCTE-IUL.
